Red Raspberry Leaf (Rubus idaeus)
Raspberry has been a beloved plant for centuries — and for good reason. Native across Europe, North America, and western Asia, this graceful member of the Rose family offers not only sweet, vibrant fruit but leaves that are among the most pleasant-tasting of all herbal remedies. Mild, smooth, and reminiscent of black tea without the caffeine, red raspberry leaf is a joy to drink on its own and a wonderful complement in any herbal blend.
The history of this plant is as rich as its flavor. Legend holds that raspberries were discovered by the Olympian gods themselves while foraging on Mount Ida — the very origin of its botanical name, idaeus. The Roman agriculturist Palladius left some of the earliest written records of its cultivation, and by Medieval times raspberry juice was prized enough to color the pages of illuminated manuscripts. King Edward I is credited with calling for its widespread cultivation in the 13th century, after which it spread quickly across Europe. In North America, raspberry leaf tea was traditionally prepared for women of the Cherokee, Iroquois, and Mohawk nations, and it has since earned recognition from the authoritative British Herbal Compendium.
Today, red raspberry leaf remains a staple in the herbal kitchen — cherished for its taste, its versatility, and its gentle healthful qualities. It blends beautifully with other herbs, often acting as a harmonizing base that softens and balances a blend.
