Peppermint Leaf (Mentha x piperita)
Peppermint is a naturally occurring hybrid of spearmint and water mint, native to Europe and now cultivated across the globe. With its instantly recognizable cool, refreshing scent, it stands as the world's most beloved mint — and has been treasured for centuries. Ancient Assyrians offered it to their fire god, and it figures prominently in Greek mythology, where the nymph Minthe was said to have been transformed into the plant itself.
Commercial cultivation in the United States began in the 1790s and had grown into a major export industry by the mid-1800s. Today, the U.S. remains the world's top producer of peppermint oil, yielding an average of over 4,000 tons each year. Our peppermint leaves are organically grown right here in the United States.
In the Kitchen
Peppermint's crisp flavor makes it one of the most versatile herbs in both sweet and savory cooking. It's a staple in teas, candies, chewing gums, toothpastes, ice creams, and baked desserts throughout the Western world. In Middle Eastern cuisine, it shines in savory applications — blended into spice rubs for lamb and other meats, stirred into yogurt, and folded into bean and cheese dishes. Fresh leaves are also a classic addition to cocktails.
Dried peppermint leaf is wonderful steeped on its own as a soothing, aromatic tea or blended with other herbs for a more complex cup.
A Note on Quality
Peppermint contains a distinctive essential oil that synthetic mint compounds simply can't replicate — both in aroma and in its beneficial properties. When you're looking for the real thing, whole-leaf peppermint makes all the difference.
