Orange Peel (Citrus x sinensis)
There is more to an orange than meets the eye — or the taste buds. While the juicy fruit inside captures most of the attention, it is the peel that holds the true concentration of the plant's essential oils, enzymes, flavonoids, and phytonutrients, gathered in three distinct layers: the flavedo, the albedo, and the oil sacs. Herbalists and physicians in China recognized this long before modern science confirmed it, incorporating dried orange peel into their formulations at least as far back as the second century BC, when it was documented in the Divine Husbandman's Classic of the Materia Medica — one of the oldest and most foundational texts in Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Native to China and carried by trade and cultivation into virtually every warm climate on earth, sweet orange is now grown across the Mediterranean, throughout South and Central America, and most abundantly in Florida and California. The peel, once considered a byproduct, has long been understood by herbalists to be among the most valuable parts of the fruit — concentrated, aromatic, and remarkably versatile.
Dried orange peel brings a bright, sweet citrus warmth to everything it touches. Its flavor is bolder and more complex than fresh orange zest — sunny and fragrant with a pleasant depth that softens beautifully in a blend. In TCM it has long been added to multi-herb formulations as a harmonizing ingredient, helping to balance and integrate the other botanicals around it. In the kitchen it finds its way into jams, jellies, and stir-fry dishes. In cosmetics it appears in both cut and powdered form. And in the tea blender's pantry, it is simply indispensable — a reliable brightener that lifts any blend it joins.
Use the cut peel steeped in hot water as a standalone infusion, add it to herbal tea blends for a cheerful citrus note, or incorporate the powder into culinary creations and drinks for a sweet, lightly fizzy flavor.
Precautions: No known precautions. As with all herbal products, we recommend consulting a qualified healthcare practitioner before use, particularly if you are pregnant, nursing, or taking any medications.
