Damiana Leaf (Turnera diffusa)

Damiana has a reputation, and it has earned it honestly. Named from the Greek daman — "to tame or subdue" — this aromatic shrub carries a feminine, wild energy that herbalists and healers across Mesoamerica have honored for centuries. It is the one who tames, as the name implies, though perhaps what it tames most reliably is a restless spirit and a guarded heart.

A small, woody shrub bearing serrated green leaves and bright yellow flowers with a warm, distinctive fragrance, damiana grows across a range stretching from the mountains of Mexico and southern Texas down through Central America, the Caribbean, and into Brazil. Our organic damiana leaf is harvested in the mountains of Mexico, where the plant has been gathered and brewed into tea for generations — long before written records and well into the present day.

It is believed that the indigenous Guaycura of the Baja region were the first to use damiana, and that the herb spread more widely when the Guaycura began trading with the Aztec. From there it found its way into the traditions of the Maya, who valued it in much the same way — as a plant with a particular affinity for vitality, desire, and the warmth of human connection. Though its reputation as an herb of amorous spirit has followed it across centuries and cultures, damiana was also simply enjoyed as a pleasant, relaxing beverage — one considered gentle enough to serve to children as a digestive and mood-lifting tea.

In modern herbal practice, damiana continues to be celebrated for its gentle relaxing qualities, its support of mood and digestive comfort, and its long-standing association with vitality. The leaves are wonderfully versatile — brew them as a standalone tea, blend them with other herbs, macerate them into a sweet liqueur or cordial, or incorporate them into herbal smoking mixtures.
